How can I improve my chances of being hired by the Peel & Toronto School Board? This was the question on my mind as I attended the career fair day here with many important people from the school boards. After talking to a Principal from the Toronto District school board, you’ll find here what I learned. Also, you’ll find what I learned from the seminar from the Peel District Board presentation and talking to another representative of an agency.
As mentioned above, I asked a principal from the TDSB for advice on becoming a good teacher and on getting hired. He asked me if I wanted to know this information to just get hired or for something else. I said, that I just want advice on how I can improve myself to be a competent teacher whether or not I get hired and he told me the following. He told me about the people that recently were hired. He talked about one candidate who volunteered and got hired because of that. He said that when teacher candidates volunteer they get a chance to become known, the principal gets to see that person in action and knows that they are ready to get involved and go beyond the classroom and help out wherever needed. In addition, he stressed that that teacher candidate was there when the principal needed her to fill in for teaching needs and to help out wherever, and that’s why he picked her. Also, another advantage of volunteering in the classroom is that it is a good way to get to know what is going on in the school and to understand the school.
He recommended that I go into the school and volunteer and in that way you know about the initiatives and the literacy programs and numeracy programs that are happening and you take full advantage of that, which will help you when you are in the interview because you can talk about that there. He recommended that we drop off our resumes at the school close to home and say that I am now available to volunteer, let me know where you need me and how I can help. That’s the key.
Also, from the Peel Board Seminar, I learned that we should be inclusive and know about assessment and evaluation and what a good tool you would use for evaluation and assessment. Also, that we should try using these educational terms frequently and know about these terms so that in the interview we can use them comfortably and successfully. She also stressed for us to know about the schools and get involved by going beyond just delivering curriculum content, (e.g., Being involved in extracurricular activities),
From an agency representative, I learned to relax, and be calm knowing that if we try to be good at what we do we will make it to our destination though it may at the present seem like its not where we want to be. He was saying that some candidates need to just stay calm and not be fixed in a sort of tunnel vision on just one board, but to keep an open mind and see how many opportunities that are available and think positive!
Thanks,
Yad
