T.V., Intelligence, & Perfectionism

Should we encourage our children to watch T.V.?

Would it be better to have our children not watch any T.V.?

How can we raise our children to be intelligent and do well in the school system and society?

What can we do to reduce perfectionistic behaviours?

These are some questions that I asked our Special Needs Prof and here are the notes that I have taken after talking with him:

Television viewing is not bad because ti promotes exposure and social interaction and gives the viewers more knowledge so that they can speak with others and connect and increase their verbal fluency. But its limits are that it is passive, instead you should channel what your child watches to match their interests and that we should talk and interact and ask questions based on what they are watching. For example , “How do you think someone else would have thought about it?” “Why…” etc.

With respect to boosting intelligence, one of the keys he mentioned were CONVERSATIONS! Talk with your children, and increase exposure by taking them on trips to places. For example, Prof. took his children to California and so when it is mentioned in the class room the children will be able to talk and converse about it and know it because they have been there.

In terms of reducing perfectionism – set a time limit. For example, that you can only revise as much as you can in these 2 hours, after that NO MORE and collect data to see if there is any difference in the perfectionistic behaviour.
